Stoner movie: THEY LIVE by John Carpenter (1988)
A true cult classic, They Live is one of the most underrated sci-fi movies ever. So amazing!
A working class American stumbles upon the world’s greatest secret, unveiled to him via the most impropable means: A pair of sunglasses. It’s crazy! Once he puts on the glasses, he sees things in their true form.
He discovers that Earth has been colonized by aliens. In their quest for resources for intergalactic expansion, the aliens have teamed up with the human economic elite, to enslave mankind. Everybody is controlled by subversive messages, telling them to “obey”, “marry and reproduce”, idolize money etc. Every billboard and magazine is designated to this control apparatus. Earth has become their third world. Man, this is why Carpenter is so awesome…
Of course, once the protagonist discovers this, his troubles begin. He decides to rebel and has to hide from the police, who (controlled by the aliens) will kill him if he is found. Things quickly turn violent, which gives way for some great action. One famous quote:
"I have come here to chew bubble gum and kick ass. And I’m all out of bubble gum."
He finds out that the reason why nobody else can see the aliens and their oppressive ways, is because of a kind of tv signal that disguises them as humans. Republicans, specifically. Ha ha!
Shit, I could go on and on about this flick. Just watch it. It’s one of the best, worst movies I have seen in my life.
